I am pleased to be assuming a new role as editor of Taking Root, replacing the irreplaceable Michelle Sutton. We all know that Michelle has done a super job with the NYSUFC blog and monthly newsletter for the past nine years. She will be missed.

As a new voice at the helm of Taking Root I hope to feature current events, grant listings, announcements and more. Please let me know if something cool or noteworthy will be happening or has already taken place in your area, and I will be sure to highlight it in Taking Root.

And guest articles! If you would like to submit an idea for a feature, whether it’s brief or on the long side, please do so. We welcome technical subject matter. Say, the resistance of Platanus occidentalis to canker pathogens. Or more subjective material based on your own experience. For example, a reflection on your favorite trees in your yard or on the streets of your municipality, or a description of what you’ve learned in a specific job or even over the course of your career.! If writing is not your thing, I will provide assistance in bringing the article to fruition. My email address is [email protected].

I’ll also be reaching out to conduct interviews and write profiles of people in the tree world, so don’t be surprised to find an email from me in your inbox.

We love pictures, so snap some with your phone!

I will also continue to contribute my somewhat regular feature, Writing for the Trees, so you can look for that column as well. For those who don’t know me, I’m a Certified Arborist, I serve on the NYSUFC board, and I co-chair ReLeaf Region 3 Hudson Valley (with DEC Forester George Profous). I’m also an author, currently researching a nonfiction book titled Heartwood: The Untold History of the American Forest.

As always, Taking Root will be sent out at the beginning of each month.

So again, hello, thank you to Michelle, and it is good to be starting in this new capacity!
