The Town of Huntington has been a Tree City USA for 24 years and has received a TCUSA Growth Award for the past 8 years. Town Supervisor Ed Smyth addressed the assembled community members after the fall 2022 tree planting.

Town of Huntington (Suffolk County) Senior Environmental Planner Christian Granelli sent along documentation from the Town’s fall planting celebration.

The Town of Huntington held its planting event with help from the NYS Urban Forestry Council Tree City USA Reward Grant Program at the Town of Huntington Senior Center (John J. Flanagan Center), on November 28, 2022. The twenty (20) trees (six provided by the NYSUFC grant funding, and 14 with funds provided by the Town) were planted in early November of 2022. Town Supervisor Smyth, Town Councilman Dr. Bennardo, Town Clerk Andrew Raia, and the director, employees and members of the Senior Center were in attendance for the event. Supervisor Smyth spoke about the planting and its benefits, and acknowledged the funding sources that led to this project’s success.

The tree protection consisting of 6-inch sections of corrugated drain pipe will be installed on each of the trees prior to the spring season when weed whacking and mowing commence. The irrigation will be installed in early spring of 2023 to ensure that the trees receive sufficient water. The Town issued a media advisory prior to the event and posted a summary of the event on its social media pages. The Town also created a brief video of the event that is posted on the Town website.
