Members of the Park Avenue Elementary School Student Council helped backfill five tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica) trees during the October 2022 fall planting celebration in the Village of Warwick.

The Village of Warwick held a tree planting event on Thursday, October 27, 2022 at Veterans Memorial Park. Village Mayor Michael Newhard presided over the event, called “The Spirit of Trees,” which was a collaboration with the Warwick Valley Gardeners. Mayor Newhard thanked the public and invited guests DEC Region 3 Senior Forester George Profous, Town of Warwick Shade Tree Commissioner and former Council President Karen Emmerich, Village of Warwick Shade Tree Commissioner Rob Scheuermann and his colleagues on the commission, Village Board Members, Garden Club Members, and the Student Council from Park Avenue Elementary School.

Town of Warwick Shade Tree Commissioner and former NYSUFC President Karen Emmerich spoke to the assembled group about the benefits of trees. The Village of Warwick has been a Tree City USA for 38 years and has received the Tree City USA Growth Award for 22 years running.

For the celebration, five tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica) trees were planted near Wawayanda Stream at the entrance to Veterans Memorial Park. They were selected to thrive in this seasonally wet location and will provide fruit and cover for wildlife, and brilliant orange to red fall color.
