You’ve probably heard about or participated in citizen efforts to reduce spotted lanternfly, including some creative approaches like a combined pub crawl/lanternfly crushing event. Crushing egg masses is also helpful. The best time to destroy spotted lanternfly egg masses is winter through early spring. You just need an old driver’s license, student ID or the like; a small sealable plastic bag; and some hand sanitizer or alcohol.

A good overview of spotted lanternfly identification, risk to our crops and forests, and what to do if you see it in New York can be found at this NYSDEC page.
