Resilience in Action: Green-Wood’s Stormwater Strategy

Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn demonstrates how urban arboretums can serve as critical climate infrastructure, not just spaces for tree care. Its 478-acre accredited arboretum manages nearly 8,000 trees and diverts 51 million gallons of stormwater annually from New York City’s combined sewer system through smart pond controls, permeable paving, and water reuse. The project has reduced pressure on aging infrastructure, advanced neighborhood flood mitigation, secured $1.81 million in state funding, and positioned Green-Wood as a partner in citywide green infrastructure planning.

This presentation explores the practical and institutional strategies behind the project, offering arborists and landscape managers a model for securing funding, engaging city planners, and transforming large landscapes into meaningful climate solutions.

Presented by NYSUFC Board Member Joseph Charap, Director of Horticulture and Curator for Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.

Google Funded Tree Planting

Join NYC Parks Tree Time for a look at the challenges we are faced with planting across our diverse city. From Google’s St John’s Terminal project to our citywide street tree planting initiative, the mission is simple: the right tree in the right place. However, finding native, caliper sized trees that can withstand the NYC streets is not easy! In 2022 our partnership with Google, who integrated over an acre of green space planted with 95% native plants within their new Manhattan building, pushed our team to source quality native trees from as far as Maryland, Ohio, and Buffalo. This webinar explores how we are turning those sourcing hurdles into a sustainable pipeline. Building on the work of our Parks colleagues at Plant Ecology Center and Nursery (PECAN) we are now providing growers with liner sized native trees that are hard to find species. Our strategy will ensure a future supply of grow bag and b&b trees that support a diverse, native urban forest for NYC.
